Blackwell, Elizabeth. Conversation with mother

"Mother, I've decided on a career," announced Elizabeth. "I'm going to study medicine."

Mrs. Blackwell accepted this statement. "Are you sure?" she asked. "Remember the bull's eye?"

Oh, I remember well! Thought Elizabeth. One day a teacher brought a bull’s eye into the classroom for a lesson on how the human eye works. It came to her in a flash. She remembered how upset she felt after seeing the eye. Her family had teased her about her squeamishness. "I am sure, Mother," said Elizabeth. "I've thought about it for some time.”      This resource helped my project and me see how her family accepted her in being a doctor and how the reacted.

1st ed. Blokley Almshouse Philadelphia: essay

Elizabeth spent the spring and summer between her two class sessions at Blokley Almshouse in Philadelphia. Though the governing body gave her permission to observe the patients and medical staff, her presence was not well received; the young resident physicians refused to have anything to do with her.    This resource helped my project and me learn what she went though when she was there at Blokley.
